Language Arts Lesson Snips

Language Arts & Multi-Subject Lesson Snips

Grades 2-8, which parental supervision

I am continuously AMAZED by the educational material available for free on the Net. While this is not a multi-media site, it does offer free, multi-subject lessons and worksheets for teachers in downloadable and printable pdfs. The lessons can be tweaked for homeschool use.

Description: For the purpose of today’s review, I’m focusing on the Language Arts portion of the site – but you’ll be happy to know there are “Lesson Snips” for Math, Science, and Social Sciences as well.

When you get to the Language Arts page, you’ll see a menu of the available lessons covering topics such as:

  • Parts of Speech – including individual lessons on verbs, irregular verbs, nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, personal pronouns, intensive and reflexive pronouns, articles, prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions, adjectives, infinitives, gerunds, participles, direct and indirect objects, interjections and more.
  • Reading – including identifying vowel sounds and sounds in word families, reading comprehension, sequencing, understanding plot, identifying the problem and solution, framing questions (who, what, where, when, how, and why), understanding narrative poetry, rhyming, and more.
  • Spelling, Writing, and Vocabulary – including basic sentence structure, capitalization, synonyms and antonyms, homonyms, using similes and metaphors, using the right tense, etc.

Click on any lesson and a new page opens with a lesson summary, the objectives, and the suggested grade range. Click on the “Get Lesson” button to download and print out the lesson and associated worksheets.

While there is a “schoolish” quality to these lessons, many of the suggested activities or the subjects covered would interest a vast array of learners and, with just a tweak, can accommodate a variety of learning styles.

If nothing else, review the menus in each subject category – you’re sure to find inspiration for introducing new ideas and topics to your kids.

Recommended Website:

Write Rhymes

Age Range: 6-18 (Grades 1-12, with parental supervision)

For those who are learning how to write poetry or limericks this is a terrific tool to have handy. You just type in a word and in seconds you’re provided with a list of words that rhyme with it!

When you get to the site simply type in the word you want to rhyme, hold down the “alt” key on your keyboard, and use your mouse to click on the word you just typed. A list of rhyming words (with from one to multiple syllables) appears on the right side of the screen.

The only drawback is that the rhyming words that are generated appear in white font making them difficult to see. Use your mouse to highlight the words in order to get a better view.

“Green” Grammar Lessons & More!

Recommended Website:

Maggie’s Earth Adventures

Age Range: 6-12 (Grades 1-7 approximately, with parental supervision)

This website offers lesson plans and interactive games in a variety of subject areas including five free grammar games that help kids learn about nouns, verbs, prefixes, suffixes, word endings, rhyming words, and how to edit written work. We are focusing on the Language Arts games for this review. The website’s objective is to educate children on environmental issues to protect and build a sustainable future for our planet. All of the games are themed around this objective.

When you get to the website you’ll see the icon, “Free Activities.” If you click on that, a new page opens where you can register (free) to receive the cross-curricular Maggie’s Earth Adventures Weekly Activity Packet (WAP) with lessons and games that will be delivered to your email inbox.

Then, look at the main menu on the right side of the screen and click under “Have you played Maggie’s Games?” There are over a dozen games including:

  • Super Match – Find words that rhyme.
  • Short Circuit – Match prefixes and suffixes with their meanings to prevent a computer short circuit.
  • Fish ‘Em Up – Catch word endings by determining if you have to double the consonant or change the y for the correct spelling.
  • Edit Dan’s Copy – Edit Dan’s work for errors in capitalization and punctuation.
  • Clean Up Your Grammar – In this game a virtual beach is littered with bad grammar. Help clean up nouns and verbs.

These games stand on their own as fun practice work for learning parts of speech, spelling rules, and other language arts skills. They are enhanced if you use the free lesson plans available by registering to get the free Weekly Activity Packs. By using the WAP, students will see the connectedness and relevance of language arts, math, science, geography, and social sciences to environmental issues.

By the way, some of the games are available in Spanish as well!
