A clever and innovative science teacher developed this free website where she shares her favorite science activities, lessons, and printables.

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu that includes:

  • Science Classroom – Get an abundance of free lesson plans, activities, printable worksheets, and links to other resources on general science, ecology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, biology, insects, eagles, the metric system, forensic science, archaeology, and more.

  • Reference Desk – An archive of links to educational science websites, lesson plans, clip art resources and much more. We didn’t follow all of these links — so parent supervision, as always, is advised.

  • Puzzle Corner – This is a cool resource! Print out free word search and crossword puzzles on cells, invertebrates, the skeletal and muscular system, genetics, rocks and minerals, constellations and much, much more! Great material for DIY science activity books!

There is much more material for classroom teachers provided at this site. Much of it can be tweaked to suit homeschoolers.

Learn To Play Drums Today!

Doug Kleiber: Learn Drums Now

Learn how to play drums with the lessons available at this website.

The lesson plans follow the creator’s, Doug Kleiber, methodology he calls H3 (Head, Hands and Heart). The student first practices without using a set of drums to learn to think about the drum beat. The next step has the student practicing the lessons on the drums while playing musical selections for background. Lastly, the focus is on learning to “feel” the music. If your student is young (5-12), Mr. Kleiber provides suggestions for using his lesson plans in the blog post – Teaching Kids to Play Drums.

There are four weeks of lessons in the plan. The topics include:

  • Learn To Play Your First Song
  • Playing with Sticks
  • Learn To Play the Parts of a Song
  • Learn To Play Drum Fills

Lessons are textural but be aware that there are affiliate links to sale sites for music supplies, so as always be sure to check the pages prior to allowing students to visit.

These lessons appear to be a good starting point for your budding musician who is interested in the drums.

Science Journals Just In Time For Earth Day!

The Natural Inquirer

Earth Day is this week! This website offers FREE science education journals: “The Natural Inquirer,” for middle and high school, “Investi-gator” for upper elementary, and readers for PreK-2. Scientists with the USDA Forest Service share their research in a fun and engaging way.

Each issue of “The Natural Inquirer” introduces students to the scientists who conduct the environmental research and includes an article or more on a specific research project. Some of the issues are entitled:

  • World’s Forests
  • A Burning Question
  • Chew on This!
  • Full Throttle Model
  • Fresh Water
  • Wilderness
  • Flower Power
  • And more!

Each issue also contains a “Discovery FACTivity” designed to help students learn scientific vocabulary words included in the articles. There are also discussion questions designed to help students think more about research. You can download the issue(s) you are interested in or order hard copies (only 5 issues at a time).

Be sure to check out the top menu under “For Educators” for links to lesson plans, science cards and posters, and more.

This is a treasure trove of environmental learning resources! Bookmark this one, as you’ll need to visit many times to explore the vast content!

Education World offers a myriad of age-appropriate cross-curriculum lesson plans. We are looking at Science today but this is certainly a resource to bookmark and return to often.

When you get to the webpage, scroll down to see a hands-on “eggs-periment” that teaches about density.

There are also ideas and activities to extend the lesson by introducing students to additional experiments to help demonstrate why people and things float more readily in Great Salt Lake than in most other bodies of water:

Design Your Own Opera

The Creative Kids Education Foundation: Hansel & Gretel: Learning about Opera

The Creative Kids Education Foundation offers this free interactive game called “Hansel and Gretel Design Your Own Opera” that provides players with music education while they pick different settings for the technical elements of creating an opera.

When you get to the site the game will launch. Try your hand at being:

  • A Costume Designer
  • A Choreographer
  • A Property Manager
  • A Lighting Technician
  • A Set Designer
  • A Technical Director
  • A Stage Director
  • A Technical Effects Director

With each scene, as you engage in activities, the music from the opera “Hansel and Gretel” is played and the meaning and nuances are pointed out by a narrator. Not only that, the lyrics that are being sung are on the screen making it easier to understand the storyline.

During Intermission, you get to try your hand at being an orchestra conductor! Learn about the instruments including strings, percussion, and brass.

When the show is over, take a virtual trip backstage and see how the production was put together. Use the spotlight menu to learn all about:

  • The Composer – Learn about the German composer, Engelbert Humperdinck.
  • Opera – Find out what an opera is and explore links to opera websites.
  • Fairy Tales – Get links to sites about Fairy Tales along with some downloadable activities.
  • Voice Studio – Learn the definitions of a Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Tenor, and Baritone. Visit a Master Class with Placido Domingo. Meet famous opera singers.
  • Teacher Resources – Download free lesson plans for the opera along with games and activities to enhance learning. Take a fun quiz to see what you’ve learned.

This activity takes about 45 minutes to complete. It is SO WORTHWHILE – and fun, educational, engaging, and entertaining for the whole family!
