This ad-supported website is a massive archive of all kinds of learning activities and resources for every school subject. For this review, we are focusing on the huge variety of free language arts games, printables, reading comprehension activities, grammar editing, spelling help, and other resources.

When you get to the site, you will see a list of activities that include:

  • Language Arts Games – Play games that teach sentence and paragraph editing, spelling, punctuation, and writing basics.
  • Online and Printable Reading Comprehension Worksheets – Read a paragraph or essay on any topic you select and answer multiple-choice questions about it. Use either the online or offline versions. Topics include the American Revolution, the Silk Road, Galaxies, Lewis and Clark, Peregrine Falcons, etc.
  • Story Units – Read 3 different online stories and enjoy the interactive activities that further learning.
  • Sentence Surgeons & Paragraph Paramedics – Learn to be an editor! Correct sentences for spelling, grammar, and punctuation online.
  • Cloze Reading – Fill in the blanks in a sentence or paragraph with the correct word from a vocabulary bank.

Other activities teach and/or remediate spelling, alphabetical order, parts of speech, punctuation, and more. Many of these activities will allow you to choose either printable or online exercises.

When you are through with the Language Arts section, use the menu at the top of the page to find activities for math, geography, science, etc.

Language Arts & History Collide!

This fantastic multimedia children’s site from The University of Manchester, offers a variety of well-crafted activities and games to learn grammar and parts of speech, along with an animated timeline of the history of the English language.

Plus you can explore other languages used around the world to encourage understanding of language in general.

When you get to the site you will see an introduction and a menu to the left that includes:

  • World Language Map – Click on an animated map to learn about different languages spoken all over the world. As you zero in on a given country, you’ll watch a video of a native speaker saying conversational phrases that are accompanied by English subtitles. Plus, you’ll learn more about the languages and dialects spoken in that country.

  • Timeline of the English Language – Discover the evolution of the English language and the influence of the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans, as well as the printing press, English Bible, Greek and Latin root words, Shakespeare, and more.

  • Naming Nouns – Explore this interactive lesson that explains what nouns are including common and proper nouns, concrete and abstract nouns, collective nouns and more. Play the “Noun Game” and take quizzes to test your knowledge.

  • Adjective Detective – Learn all about adjectives and how to use them including comparative and superlative adjectives. Play the “Adjective Game” and take quizzes to test your knowledge.

  • Match the Eponyms – Do you know what an eponym is? Here’s a clue: Do you know the origin of the word “sandwich”? This is a word trivia feast – and lots of fun!

  • Borrowing Words – Many English words were “borrowed” from other languages. Play a game and try to match the English word to the language of origin. You’ll learn about the origin of words like score, zombie, bandana, skunk, and many more.

  • Idioms Game – Idioms are sayings such as: “The early bird catches the worm.” Match the idioms to their meanings in this informative game.

  • And more!

The games are very engaging. Your kids will learn far more than the standard grammar drills we see in most language arts games. They’ll learn historical and cultural information that will enhance their understanding of the English language.

Begin Learning a Foreign Language Today!

With this commercial website, visitors can use the free lessons to learn basic foreign language skills.

While some of the lessons are for paid members only, indicated by the Polly Lingual icon, there is still a lot of great material available for free on this site, especially in the Beginner sections. Language choices include:

  • French
  • Spanish
  • English
  • Italian
  • German
  • Portuguese
  • Hebrew
  • Arabic
  • Russian
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Dutch

Lessons can include vocabulary audios, grammar instructions, interactive games such as Memorama, Alphabet Soup (word searches), Whack-a-Word, and Hangman as well as additional downloadable worksheets. There is a Verb Conjugation Trainer tool to brush up on verb conjugations as well as interactive maps showing locations a language is spoken which also provides some additional information about that location.

Even if visitors may need to search for the free material, there are some great teaching opportunities available on this site that might make checking it out worthwhile.
