Free Environmental Science Journals

It’s Tuesday, April 21, 2020, and time for Science at ClickSchooling!

Happy Earth Day tomorrow! This website offers FREE science education journals: “The Natural Inquirer,” for middle and high school, “Investi-gator” for upper elementary, and readers for PreK-2. Scientists with the USDA Forest Service share their research in a fun and engaging way.

Each issue of “The Natural Inquirer” introduces students to the scientists who conduct the environmental research and includes an article or more on a specific research project. Some of the issues are entitled: 

  • World’s Forests
  • A Burning Question
  • Chew on This!
  • Full Throttle Model
  • Fresh Water
  • Wilderness
  • Flower Power
  • And more!

Each issue also contains a “Discovery FACTivity” designed to help students learn scientific vocabulary words included in the articles. There are also discussion questions designed to help students think more about research. You can download the issue(s) you are interested in or order hard copies (only 5 issues at a time).

Age Range: 4-18 (Grades PreK-12, with parental supervision)

 

This website offers a FREE science education journal titled, “The Natural Inquirer,” in which scientists with the USDA Forest Service share their research with students of all ages.

When you get to the site, you’ll see a featured issue that you can click on and download the PDF. To see the issues by grade, scroll over “Order Products” in the top menu to choose from: 

  • Middle & High School
  • Upper Elementary
  • PreK – 2nd Grade

You can then download the issue of choice. 

Each issue of “The Natural Inquirer” for Middle & High School students introduces students to the scientists who conduct the environmental research and includes an article on a specific research project. Each issue also contains a “FACTivity” designed to help students learn scientific vocabulary words included in the articles. There are also discussion questions designed to help students think more about research. For the elementary grades, the issues are called Investi-gator and the PreK-2nd grade issues are called the National Inquirer Reader Series. Some issues are also offered in Spanish!

Be sure to check out the series of Scientist Cards and Posters – these cards are an excellent tool for teaching students about different types of science and scientists and can be printed and used offline. There are also accompanying lesson plans and supplemental resources under “For Educators” in the left side bar. And there are some games and activities and more under “For Kids” in the top menu.

This non-profit foundation’s website provides free science project ideas, instructions, explanations, and assistance “for serious students” to build their literacy in science and technology in the 21st century.

You’ll find free projects and activities in all areas of science including:

  • Math & Computer Science
  • Engineering
  • Behavioral & Social Sciences

You’ll even find science projects that cover cooking, food, music, photography, videos, computer games, and sports.

Science Buddies aims to reduce the hassle of hands-on scientific investigations while encouraging fun, intellectually-stimulating and cutting-edge science education. When you get to the site you’ll see a menu that includes: 

  • Science Projects – Over 1,200 scientist-outlined projects in 30 different fields of science and engineering. Plus you can use the “Topic Selection Wizard” to find a project that matches your student’s unique interests!
  • Project Guides – Not sure how to proceed? This section includes step-by-step guidance about the scientific method, research, constructing and testing a hypothesis, analyzing data, drawing a conclusion, and communicating results.

Free DVDs from John Stossel!

Age Range: 11-Adult (about middle school through adult; children with parental supervision)

 

“Stossel in the Classroom”, sponsored by the Center for Independent Thought (a non-profit educational foundation) offers a free DVD each school year that is a compilation of John Stossel’s television programs and specials designed for use in the classroom to enhance the study of social sciences. All you have to do is register (free), and agree to provide feedback once you’ve viewed the DVD – and the DVD’s will be mailed to your home or school address. There are also free, downloadable “Teacher Guides” for the DVDs at the website with lesson plans, activity suggestions, handouts, and vocabulary.
A new DVD is produced each year and is free to teachers including home educators. Right now you can get TWO FREE DVDs: the 2014 edition and the 2015 edition (while supplies last)! When you get to the site, you’ll see John Stossel’s smiling face and learn how to register to receive the DVDs.

When you’re through registering, use the menu at the top of the page to access all of the free resources available. Watch free “Streaming Videos” from Stossel on thought-provoking topics. Past videos are archived at the site. You can also search the videos by subject. Since today’s focus is on Science, search the topics for:

Age Range: 10-14 (Designed for grades 6-8, but there are aspects of these journals that will appeal to a much broader age/grade range. All children with parental supervision)

 

Happy Earth Day! This website offers a FREE science education journal titled, “The Natural Inquirer,” in which scientists with the USDA Forest Service share their research with middle school students. Each article in every issue explains research being conducted on trees, wildlife, insects, and water.
Each issue of “The Natural Inquirer” introduces students to the scientists who conduct the environmental research and includes an article on a specific research project. The article, as explained at the website, is “written in a way that scientists write when publishing their research in journals.” Topics include:
  • Climate Change
  • Invasive Species
  • Relationship Between Carbon, Photosynthesis, and Roots of Trees
  • Urban Forests
  • Tropical Biomes
  • Rocky Mountains
  • Natural Resources
  • And more!

Each issue also contains a “Discovery FACTivity” designed to help students learn scientific vocabulary words included in the articles. There are also discussion questions designed to help students think more about research.

When you get to the site you’ll see a brief introduction, information on the latest issue of “The Natural Inquirer,” and scrolling below that will reveal a few new free resources:
  • Download the first series of scientist cards and posters – These cards are an excellent tool for teaching students about different types of science and scientists and can be printed and used offline. There is also an accompanying lesson plan designed to encourage students to use their imagination and envision themselves as scientists while they explain and present their understanding of the Natural Inquirer Scientists’ Card Series to their peers.
  • A few items for Pre-K and 1st grade – Find coloring sheets and activity sheets available for Pre-K through 4th grade.

On the left side of the screen choose from the drop-down menu:

  • View & Order Issues: This is where you can access all the archived issues. Some issues are also offered in Spanish!
  • Education Resources: Put your cursor over this menu item to see a drop-down list by age group, that includes a glossary, games and activities, podcasts, slideshows, lesson plans and more that are themed around topics covered in various issues of “The Natural Inquirer.” This is a treasure trove of environmental learning resources!
