A clever and innovative science teacher developed this free website where she shares her favorite science activities, lessons, and printables.

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu that includes:

  • Science Classroom – Get an abundance of free lesson plans, activities, printable worksheets, and links to other resources on general science, ecology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science, biology, insects, eagles, the metric system, forensic science, archaeology, and more.

  • Reference Desk – An archive of links to educational science websites, lesson plans, clip art resources and much more. We didn’t follow all of these links — so parent supervision, as always, is advised.

  • Puzzle Corner – This is a cool resource! Print out free word search and crossword puzzles on cells, invertebrates, the skeletal and muscular system, genetics, rocks and minerals, constellations and much, much more! Great material for DIY science activity books!

There is much more material for classroom teachers provided at this site. Much of it can be tweaked to suit homeschoolers.

This website helps build biological knowledge step-by-step through an intelligent sequence of questions and answers. This Q&A format discusses all branches of biology.

When you get to the site you’ll see a brief introduction. Then use the menu in the middle of the page to explore hundreds of questions and answers divided into biology branches that include:

  • Biochemistry
  • Cell Biology
  • Microbiology
  • Zoology
  • Physiology
  • Botany
  • Genetics
  • Ecology
  • And More!

Each of these branches is then subdivided into specific subjects. For example, under the heading “Microbiology” you’ll find the following subject areas:

Learn Geography Through Earth Sciences

This ad-supported website helps kids (of many ages) learn about geography through earth sciences.

When you get to the site, read the introduction as it contains good info on where to start and how to navigate for best use. To get started scroll half way down the home page and click on “Next Stop On Site Tour”, or use the menu to explore: 

  • Earth Energy – Explore global Geometry, electromagnetic radiation, waves and particles, solar energy, atmospheric interaction, and temperature including Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin scales.
  • Earth Structure – Learn what the Earth is made of including the plates, mantles, the liquid inner core, the magnetic fields, rocks and minerals, and discover what tectonics has to do with earthquakes and volcanoes.
  • Biosphere – Learn about our living world including ecology, ecosystems, food chains, soil, water, climates, energy, erosion, oxidation, and how it all interacts to support life.
  • Atmosphere – Find out what composes the atmosphere, thermosphere, stratosphere, and troposphere. Learn about temperature and air pressure, altitude, the Coriolis Force, and the Greenhouse Effect.
  • Hydrosphere – Discover how all kinds of water moves through the world including freshwater, seawater, and groundwater. Learn about wetlands and aquatic biomes. Learn how to identify cloud types.
  • Climate – Explore weather, climates (polar, subtropical, tropical), seasons, clouds, hurricanes and monsoons, and check out the instruments used to measure the force and effect of it all.
  • Cycles – Learn about the interactive cycles of our ecosystem that include carbon, water, oxygen, nitrogen, iron, phosphorus, and rocks.

When you are through exploring each section of the site, you can take interactive quizzes to test your knowledge. A bonus feature is that this site provides links to its “sister” sites for further study in the fields of astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and math.

Learn about the science of ecology with this archived website from the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis in Santa Barbara, California.


When you get to the site, you’ll see a menu of choices that includes: 

  • Learn About Ecology – Get an introduction to the study of ecology, learn about endangered species, find out about careers in ecology, and enjoy interviews with ecologists.
  • Data & Science – Discover the scientific method! Learn to analyze data and present results. Design your own ecology experiment.
  • World Biomes – Learn about the 5 major biomes including aquatic, desert, forest, grassland, and tundra. Discover the flora and fauna that thrive in each.
  • Marine Mammals – Meet Blue, Grey, and Humpback whales, a variety of dolphins, and sea otters!

Each section contains clickable links to information, videos, sound, and fun facts. You can also check out some classroom science projects and an assortment of links to other science websites.

This website, developed by the University of Utah, provides free lessons, experiments, activities, virtual labs, and worksheets designed to provide a basic education in the science of genetics.

When you get to the site, you can get a good introduction to the topics of traits, DNA & genes, proteins, heredity, mutations and more by exploring “Basic Genetics.” Other menu items include: 

  • Cell Biology – Learn about cell communication, stem cells and cloning.
  • Plants – Cotton and Insect Herbivores
  • Human Health – Metabolism, Genetic Disorders and Gene Therapy
  • Neruoscience –  Memory and Addiction
  • And more.

Also, under Science Tools, check out the Virtual Labs: 

  • Swab your cheek and extract DNA from your cells!
  • Use gel electrophoresis to discover how scientists work with tiny molecules they can’t see.
  • Perform a DNA microarray experiment to compare a healthy cell and a cancer cell.

You can also learn about the ecology of Utah’s Great Salt Lake.

Be sure to click on the “Teach.Genetics” link located at the bottom of the home page where you’ll find additional tools and resources for learning about genetics, bioscience, and health. While this is designed for classroom use, it can be tweaked for the homeschool environment.
