Listen to Radio Broadcasts from Famous Children’s Authors

BBC School Radio: English – Meet the Authors: Listen to Interviews w/ Children’s Book Authors

ClickScholar Kimberly Saunders recommended this website that provides access to BBC radio programs on numerous subjects that are designed to support classroom teachers and students

For this review, I focused on interviews with children’s authors that you can listen to as “audio on demand” with Real Player. The authors answer questions posed by students about how they started writing, where they find inspiration for their stories, how they develop characters and storyline, and questions about their plans for future books. Eight prolific authors (who are very popular in the United Kingdom) are featured including:

  • Anne Fine
  • Eva Ibbotson
  • Michael Morpurgo
  • Philip Ridley
  • Jeremy Strong
  • Jacqueline Wilson
  • Valerie Bloom
  • Brian Patten

When you get to the site, simply click on the author’s name on the menu and a new page opens that launches the interview.

Most are about 20 minutes in length and are sure to engage and inspire young writers.

When you are finished listening to the interviews, use the menu to explore the full catalog of radio programs on subjects such as:

  • History
  • Math
  • Geography
  • Music
  • Drama
  • and more!

Many of the programs are supported by “Teacher’s Notes” in pdf files that you can download for free. They include lesson plans, follow-up activities, and curriculum ideas – as well as links to other resources to enhance learning.

Note: I received error messages when I tried to access some of the radio broadcasts. It was disappointing, but there are enough working links to offset that. :)

This site has “free online literature with more than 2000 classic texts” where you can read, study or research.

When you scroll over the icons on the left sidebar, you’ll see new, featured, and/or recommended books. You can click on something that grabs your attention or you can start at each icon: 

  • Read – Choose fiction, poetry, drama, and more. When you click on an author’s name, all the books on the site by that author are listed. If you click on a title, there is usually a summary of the book first, then each chapter listed separately.
  • Study – There are study guides for books written by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, and more.
  • Research – Choose from non-fiction, reference, biographies, or religious texts

You can also use the search feature to find something by text or author/title.

Downloadable Games and Curricula for Math & More

Ellen McHenry’s Basement Workshop – Math

This website provides free downloadable games and curricula for a wide range of subjects to be used offline.

The free math games and activities teach various math strands and concepts in a fun, hands-on way. The game instructions and materials can be printed out and assembled for play offline. The games were designed by a homeschool mom and illustrator named Ellen McHenry. When she couldn’t find resources that were really what she wanted and needed, she got out her old college texts (she majored in drawing and minored in math), did some review, and started inventing her own stuff, much of which she makes available on her site for free.

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of the math games and activities that include: 

  • Storm the Castle! – Players (ages 5-9 or so) pretend to be medieval soldiers attacking a castle. They must cross a field and a bridge using math skills, find the difference between two numbers, find coordinates on a grid, and solve simple word problems.
  • Loot the Pirate Ship! – Players (ages 7-11 or so) use and practice multiples of numbers, prime numbers, and divisibility rules to capture ships and loot them.
  • Sheep Herding Math Strategy Game – This is a two-player game that is fun for all ages. One person plays the sheep, the other is the border collie in this classic strategy game that is similar to “Hares and Hounds.”
  • Professor Pig’s Magic Math (a mini-curricula) – Professor Pig teaches his students (ages 5-9 or so) to see patterns with numbers that will allow them to easily do addition without any memorization. There is review and practice built into the activities eliminating boring drill worksheets!

These games are not only great for elementary students but are helpful to older students who struggle with math or need remedial work.

But that’s not all! Ms. McHenry has also created free educational games and lessons for students of all ages, in the following subjects: 

  • Plants
  • Animals
  • Human Body
  • Earth Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Physical Science
  • History/Social Studies
  • Geography/Maps
  • Art
  • Language Arts

This website was designed to be a cross-disciplinary opportunity for students in grades K-12 to study the behavior and distribution of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

These little birds tolerate people well and are drawn to gardens and feeders where they can easily be studied. The data collected is shared via the website with students worldwide. You can access a great deal of information at this site for free, but they also offer the opportunity to register for $20/year, a fee that enables students to participate fully in the research project. (Details are at the site.) However, you don’t have to register to learn interesting facts about a variety of hummingbirds or to access the activities and lesson ideas in math, art, geography, drama, music, and writing.


When you get to the site you will see the introduction to “Hummingbird Mathematics Activities.” Just scroll down to review the lesson and click on the links to the other curriculum pages as well.

The amazing teacher and internet lesson provider Mr. Donn has collaborated with artist Phillip Martin to bring students, parents, and teachers this extensive archive of PowerPoint lessons and activities on every facet of Language Arts.

When you get to the site, you’ll see a menu of free presentations in PowerPoint format and interactive online lessons and games that includes: 

  • Reading – ABCs, phonics, Dolch words, comprehension, story maps, spelling and more.
  • Literature – Author studies, myths, fairy tales, Shakespeare, etc.
  • Poetry – Haiku, cinquain, and limericks.
  • Grammar – Parts of speech, verb tenses, sentence structure, subjects and predicates, and more.
  • Punctuation – Capitalization, commas, colons and semicolons, apostrophes and more.
  • Word Analysis – Root words, prefixes/suffixes, synonyms, analogies, similes, metaphors, more.
