This website provides a free biology textbook with illustrations online.

This is written by a university biology professor, but may be very useful for a motivated middle-schooler and would be an appropriate online text for a high-school-level, full-year biology course. As one of our readers put it, “It’s free, thorough, highly visually appealing, contains numerous references and links, and an online linked glossary of terms. Some chapters include a list of learning objectives and review questions.”

There isn’t much more to add except that when you get to the site, you’ll see the table of contents that covers subjects such as:

Summer Fun Arcade & Video Game Style Math Games!

This commercial website offers the opportunity to try a variety of FREE arcade and video games that foster skill in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, ratios, proportions as well as other academic subjects. The company produces online video games for classroom use with the intent of engaging students with the same persistence and involvement they use when playing arcade games to increase their time-on-task (practicing).

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of educational games. Notice that the menu offers games for single players and multiple players. You’ll find intriguing game titles such as:

  • Alien Addition
  • Demolition Division
  • Dirt Bike Proportions
  • Grand Prix Multiplication
  • Jet Ski Addition
  • Meteor Multiplication
  • and more!

Click on any game title and a new window opens with instructions that allow you to set parameters based on your student’s ability level. Then, let the fun and focused practice repetition begin! This is a lot more engaging than the usual drill-and-practice work and, according to the company, it leads to fluent performance levels quickly and without drudgery.

By the way, we are not adept at playing video games but had no trouble maneuvering the arrow keys, space bar, and mouse to play these games.

In addition to the math games you’ll also find games that improve grammar, vocabulary, and geography (think states and capitals, etc.).

Description: HoodaMath.com is an ad-supported website that offers FREE math games to learn and practice basic math skills in the following areas:

  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Fractions
  • Integers
  • Algebra

When you get to the site, you’ll see some featured games. To sort by math strand and grade range, scroll to the menu at the bottom of the page.

Notice that the games can be sorted by game style as well – such as games that require the player to escape, shop, build, race, etc.

IMPORTANT: Every game is free to play but is accompanied by a randomly generated advertisement, usually delivered as a video clip. Some of the ad content is geared for adults, not kids. As always, parents should preview the website and supervise all Internet access.

You’ll also find links to some animated math “movies” and math tutorials (on a YouTube channel with random ads) that provide instruction in Whole Numbers, Decimals, Fractions, Ratio and Proportion, Percent, Integers, Order of Operations, Algebra, and Geometry designed for grades 3-6. To find the movies and tutorials look at the top of the home page for links. The videos are meant to be entertaining but may seem silly to more mature kids.

Challenging Daily Math Puzzle

This ad-supported website provides free KenKen math puzzles. What’s a KenKen? It’s a logic puzzle that mixes a Sudoku puzzle and arithmetic. It was invented by a Japanese mathematics instructor, Tetsuya Miyamoto. His goal was to improve his students’ math and logic skills.

As explained on the website:

“KenKen is a grid-based numerical puzzle that uses the basic math operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—while also challenging your logic and problem-solving skills. By altering the size of a KENKEN grid, from 3 x 3 up to 9 x 9, and employing different combinations of the math operations, five different difficulty levels can be generated, and a seemingly endless number of puzzles. In a way, KenKen is like a game of chess: The more you think ahead to your next move and consider all the possible outcomes, the better you’ll get—and the smarter you’ll become!”

When you get to the website you’ll see the puzzles of the day. If you’re unfamiliar with KenKen, click on “How To Play” on the menu at the top of the page. You’ll not only read an explanation of how to play, but you can follow a step-by-step tutorial. Then, test your skills with the daily puzzles.

Bookmark the site to return each day for the daily puzzles, or sign up (as a teacher) to receive the free newsletter and a set of KenKens will be emailed to you weekly.

Games for Multiplication Practice

This United Kingdom website offers a fee-based online math program, but it provides some free sample games that give kids practice in multiplication.

When you get to the site, you’ll see 3 game choices: 

  • Underwater Pursuit – Choose a number and then find the multiple.
  • Space Hunter – Answer the multiplication question before the space alien gets you.
  • Drone Race – Quickly answer before the opponent drone does.

You can also take a multiplication and division math test. You have 3 minutes to answer as many questions as you can.
