Story & Activities for Emerging Readers

September 21st, 2011

Hi! It’s Wednesday, September 21, 2011 and time for Language Arts at ClickSchooling!

Recommended Website:
Roy the Zebra

Age Range: 4-8 (with parental assistance and supervision)

This website is designed for emerging readers and offers free reading games, stories and teaching resources.

When you get to the site you will see a picture of a zebra in the middle of the screen along with a feature titled “Interactive Reading Games.”

Click on the picture of the zebra and you will be treated to the Tale of a Singing Zebra.  It’s a guided story about Roy, a singing zebra, who goes on an adventure after escaping from the world’s worst zoo.

The “Interactive Reading Games” section has free games that help teach concepts such as rhyming, capital letters, punctuation, and more.

You can click on the features, or use the horizontal navigation menu at the top of the page to explore:

*Interactive Reading Games – Help your child develop reading skills by playing word and sentence structure games online.

*Guided Reading Stories – Access all 9 parts of the Tale of a Singing ZebraWhen you click on the arrow icons in each part of the story, a new page opens. Then, use the menu on the left to access:

  • Discussion Sheets – Get discussion questions that can be used before and after each section.
  • Related Literacy Worksheets – Print literacy worksheets to do offline that are related to each section of the story.

You can also listen to songs and print out the lyrics for each one (pdf).

Although the site is free to use without registration, “Roy the Zebra” will prompt you to register. It may be that once you register you’ll receive marketing messages to purchase the software that teaches concepts such as consonant blends, long vowels, and tricky words.

Again, you don’t have to register or purchase a thing to explore the free activities here.
