Age Range: 9-18 (Grades 4-12, with parental supervision)

At this virtual museum from the Florida Museum of Natural History, dig into the world of paleontology by exploring the fossil records of horses.

Begin your visit by first learning about the science of horses. Use the image menu to select:

  • What’s in a Name? – Learn how biologists use scientific names to “formalize the process of naming animals.”
  • Amazing Feets: Tales told by Toes – Discover how the characteristics of an animal’s hooves and toes determine the relatives of the horse.
  • Stratigraphy Layer by Layer – Examine the process of fossilization.
  • Sedimental Journey: Geological Time Scales – Gain an understanding of stratigraphy, the study of geological time.
  • Internet Browsers (and Grazers!): Gallery of Fossil Records – Take a tour of horse fossils and learn about their history, discovery and much more. (To navigate this section, use the image map to make a selection, then your back button on your browser to return to the map.)

When you have finished with your tour, return to the home page by selecting the option in the lower menu. In the lower left, select the “WE DIG HORSES! Pony Express” link. Once arriving at Pony Express Archive and reading the introduction, scroll down to the newsletters. These PDF newsletters include a lot more information, images, and more regarding archeological digs, fossils, and more.
