Orkin Pest Control Company provides a free, virtual lab dissection of the American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) for the study of insect anatomy. As explained at the website, “Insects are a major component of every non-marine ecosystem on earth, placing Entomology at the core of agricultural, environmental and life science curricula.” The Virtual Roach is an auto-tutorial in insect anatomy that uses images from scientific illustrations, scanning electron micrographs and photomicrographs along with scientific terminology and references.

When you get to the site you’ll see the “Orkin” logo. To the right is a menu that allows you to select the views for the virtual dissection that include:

  • Exoskeleton – Head, Thorax, Abdomen, Habitus
  • Viscera – Circulatory, Digestive, Endocrine, Excretory, Muscular, Nervous, Reproductive, and Respiratory systems

Click on any one to explore this fascinating virtual lab activity.

Directly above the main screen you’ll see the “Tabs” that include:

  • Index – See a list of all of the parts of the roach that are included in the virtual dissection.
  • Help – Don’t miss this – it briefly explains the features included in the tutorial and how to use them.

This is a terrific way to get familiar with insect anatomy and could be used as a pre-lab introduction or as a post-lab review tool should you decide to conduct a real dissection. Try not to say, “Eewwww!”
