Hi!  It’s Monday, August 1, 2011 and time for Math at ClickSchooling!

Recommended Website:
MathLibs.org

Age Range: 7-10 (about grades 3-4, with parental guidance)

This website offers a fun way to practice math facts by playing “Math Libs” – a game similar to “Mad Libs,” the popular language arts game.

You type in the names of people, objects, and numbers which are used to generate math word problems that cover whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, place value, expanded notation, multiplication, long division, algebraic thinking, geometry, probability and more.

When you get to the site you’ll see a welcome message. Select either:

*MathLibs – This is the game generator. Choose grade 3 or 4 and then follow the prompts on the screen to choose a problem “Set.”  You’ll be prompted to type in information to generate word problems. If you answer incorrectly, you will see the correct answer together with a brief explanation and cartoon animation of how to do the problem.

Note: The 3rd grade MathLibs allow you to select the multiplication tables you wish to practice, so the game can be varied each time. The 4th grade MathLibs doesn’t offer the same flexibility so you’ll see the same set of math problems generated each time.

*Lessons – These interactive math lessons cover most math strands as previously described. They can be used to instruct or review. The lessons are presented in an engaging way with colorful animations and easy-to-understand demonstrations.

Be sure to scroll down the landing page to access math quizzes and practice questions too.

The MathLibs and Lessons are offered for 3rd and 4th graders, but there’s enough fun and flexibility here to make it appealing to a broader age range and ability level.

When you’re through exploring MathLibs, be sure to use the menu at the top of the page to see the other free online lessons offered at this website.
