I received a message from Samantha McClintick to check out today’s website, Book Adventure. It provides free activities that not only motivate kids to read — but allows them to win prizes for reading! The site is designed for kids in grades K-8 and is sponsored by the Sylvan Learning Foundation.

When you get to the site you will see a brief introduction and some featured activities. In order to access all that is offered at this site, you must register as a “New User.” Once registered, use the menu on the left to enter:

  • Kids Zone — This section allows kids to find books to read based on their interests, age, and reading level. Click on “Book Finder,” answer questions on a form, submit it, and a personalized book list is created. Print it out and take it to the library. Kids can also utilize “Quiz-O-Matic” that generates quizzes about books kids have read. Take the quiz and earn points toward prizes that are archived in the “Prize Library.”
  • Parents Place — This section houses all kinds of resources for parents to help encourage their children’s reading. Read book reviews, find reading events and incentives, get links to educational websites, access edutainment for the family, and even find parent enrichment opportunities as well as info on how to recognize and address reading challenges in children. (There’s a limited Home Schooling resource section here as well.)
  • Teachers Lounge — Find resources for teachers (many are duplicates from the Parents Place) along with ideas for classroom activities and strategies to help kids enjoy reading.
