List member, Michael G., recommended today’s website that is part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission that was appointed by the President, the Senate and the House of Representatives following the passage of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission Act in 2000.
Its purpose is to educate and inform the public about the life and times of Lincoln and the impact he had on the development of our nation. Lincoln’s bicentennial will be celebrated in 2009. Michael commented, “…in addition to preparing the public for this birthday celebration five years from now, this Web site offers many fine links on teaching resources about Abraham Lincoln that are well worth the look.”
When you get to the website you will see a brief introduction and menu in the left column that includes:
- Timeline — a list of important dates in Lincoln’s life — you can click on the icons on the timeline to learn even more.
- Speeches — an archive of Lincoln’s addresses including the Gettysburg address translated into 29 different languages.
- Links for Teachers and Students — an extensive list of links to other websites about Lincoln, many of which include lessons and activities.
- Gallery — an impressive collection of photographs and illustrations documenting Lincoln’s life and times.
This website is in production and more resources and educational materials will be added to it as Lincoln’s bicentennial draws near. Bookmark this one, and return from time to time to explore the new additions.
