The annual Iditarod Sled Dog Race begins in March in Alaska. At today’s website you can learn about the history of the race, and once it begins, follow the mushers’ trail from the comfort of your home. When you get to the site you will see a brief introduction and a menu that offers an interview with an Iditarod champion, an investigation of sledding as a sport, some interesting Iditarod-themed student activities, a photo gallery, and other Iditarod website links for further information. For lesson plans in math, social studies, language arts, and science click on “Iditarod in the Classroom.” Note: This site may load a bit slowly, but it’s worth the wait. :)

If you enjoy this website, you may also enjoy the official Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race website. Be sure to look at the “Teacher on the Trail” and “Teachers & Students” menu items for more curricular ideas.

Finally, don’t’ miss Scholastic’s feature on the Iditarod created especially for students.
