Columbus Day

Columbus Day is Monday, October 8th. There is a great deal of information on the Internet about Christopher Columbus and all of the history and controversy surrounding his voyages and discoveries. From simple school-type coloring pages to primary source documents, it’s all on the Net. Interestingly, many of the sites have the same reference sources for various aspects of Columbus and his voyages. I found the Columbus Day site to contain a large number of these same references on the menu — so I decided to feature it at Click Schooling because it provides not only the basic information but many opportunities for more in-depth study as well.

When you get to the site you will see a menu. Here are some of the menu items:

  • A Timeline of Columbus’ life
  • Myths and Facts about Columbus
  • A Biography
  • A Map of his Voyages
  • Portraits of Columbus
  • Columbus as Navigator
  • Columbus’ Ships
  • Indigenous Peoples (Including the Taino)
  • Columbus’ Writings
  • Columbus Controversies

There is much more. There are links to other websites about Columbus too.

For those of you who just want a lesson plan — the web is full of these as well. At this next site, if you scroll down a little you will find a menu of links to lesson plans about Columbus (with brief descriptions and recommended age/grade ranges). Some contain simple activities and crafts, others are Internet Research projects.

If you don’t find what you are looking for at these sites, simply enter “Christopher Columbus” into any search engine and you will be rewarded with page after page of links to websites.
