The Abacus ~ The Art of Calculating with Beads

This site presents the most complete information on the history and use of the Abacus that we have ever seen. When you get to the site there will be a menu of choices.

Click on the first choice “Introduction” and you will see a good picture of an Abacus and an explanation of what each part represents and what technique is used for calculations.

You can click on “History” and see an evolutionary timeline of the Abacus from 500 B.C. to modern day, read about different number boards used by different cultures, and see the differences between Chinese, Japanese, and Russian Abacuses.

You can also click on instructions for addition and subtraction exercises using an Abacus.

For those who really want to know more, you can read about and compare the Chinese and Mesoamerican abacuses too.

Want to build your own Abacus? You will find the complete Lego plans for constructing an abacus at this site – and if (like some of us) you can’t find all of the Lego parts you will need (check under the couch cushions) – you can order a personalized Abacus here as well.

Not only that there are instructions for computerized versions of the Abacus, recommendations for books on the Abacus, and links to other sites about the Abacus. Whew! Much to see and look at – all fascinating and fun. Enjoy!
