Songs and Games in Spanish

September 20th, 2014

It’s Saturday, September 20, 2014, and time for Foreign Languages at ClickSchooling!

Recommended Website:

Juegos y Canciones

Age Range: 4-18 (Grades PreK-12, with parental supervision)

This website was designed by a kindergarten teacher to appeal to the very young, but beginners of all ages can learn something here.
When you get to this website, you can read the long introduction (if you like), that explains this webpage author’s experiences learning and teaching Spanish abroad. (Teachers may find the discussion of bilingual education and second language acquisition of interest.) You will also find a bookstore full of Amazon-linked recommendations, an opportunity to participate in some discussions and help develop curriculum, and information about how families can learn Spanish together through immersion programs in Guatemala or Mexico.

But there’s a special treat at the bottom (scroll way down) under the heading “Songs and Games for You!

Here you will find popular tunes in Spanish such as the classic folk song, “De Colores,” and about a dozen other tunes available in midi or mp3 format (and many are in the downloadable iTunes collection as well). There are also printable lyrics in Spanish, plus games or hand motions or, in one case, a “show” (a series of illustrations) for you to watch while you sing.

There are also about a half dozen other games and activities for Spanish learning. Every page is available in English or Spanish. The email address is provided for the author of each song or activity so that you can contact them directly if you have any questions. Although the lyrics aren’t provided in English, the activity descriptions are often clear enough that you can guess! (And for the words that you can’t guess, just type “translate” into your favorite search engine.)

Songs for Teaching

Songs for Teaching

Age Range: 3-10 (Grades PreK-5, with parental supervision)

Wow! For those of you who find it easier to learn any subject when it is set to music – you will love this website! Songs for Teaching offers an incredible directory of songs that help teach the following subjects:
  • Reading
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Everyday Activities
  • Movement
  • Math
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Music

–and more!

When you get to the site you will see a short introduction and a menu selection in the center of the screen. We found the menu in black and white on the left side of the screen much easier to use to navigate the site. Click on the blue “L” beside the subject you are interested in and a new page will open with a menu of songs in the middle of the page. If you click on the green “P” you are taken to a page with the products available for purchase. The lyrics pages also have ordering information available for the different titles.
Please note that this is also an ad supported website. The only problem we found was that not all of the links for every song title work. That’s not a big surprise considering the size of this site, the number of links, and how much the web changes from day to day. Most of the links we tried did work.

What is really remarkable and worthwhile about this site is that they have listed so many musical choices in each subject category. You can use this site online to learn songs that help reinforce educational facts, or you can purchase the CDs/MP3 downloads that contain the songs you want to listen to at home or in the car. This is a great resource tool for home educators.

Recommended Website:

Touchdown Songs

Age Range: 12-18 (Grades 7-12, with parental supervision)

This lesson plan from The Kennedy Center ArtsEdge archive examines the connection between music and football.

Audio presentations narrated by composer Tom Hedden thoroughly explain how music and sports are intertwined. Listen online or download as MP3s to listen at your leisure on your computer or portable MP3 listening device.

These 12-15 minute presentations are broken into three parts:

  • Fight Songs – Where did they start and what make a great song?
  • Half-time Sounds – How has halftime become an American institution and brought us marching band music uniquely American?
  • NFL Film Music – What does it take to write music that makes you think “football”?

While listening to the segments use the questions found on the “Think About” tab to help your student become an active listener. Dig deeper into your study with the links under the “Learn More” tab or use the suggestions “For The Educator” to expand your study.

You don’t have to be a football fan to appreciate this engaging mini-study.
