Age Range: 11-17 (with parental guidance)

The University of Cambridge presents this terrific website with downloadable multimedia explorations of how math relates to real life issues such as nutrition, disease, vaccinations, and the economics of heath. The math topics covered include percentages, graphs, probability, equations, contingency tables, tree diagrams and much more!

When you get to the site you’ll see a description of what’s provided on the site. Click on “Multi-Media Packs” to get to the engaging math activities that answer questions such as:

  • Is eating bacon sandwiches bad for you (or are the statistics
    misleading)?
  • What are the odds that you test positive for something and the
    test is wrong?
  • How does vaccination work?

Explore these and other health-related questions from a mathematical perspective.

You can also do an in-depth study of “Babylonian Maths” that hone skills in number and place value, multiplication, division, inverses, shape, and symmetry.

If you still want more, click over to the “Cross-Curricular Resources and Projects” section to find correlations between mathematics and art, geography, history, music, science, sports and more. The videos (VCs) in this section don’t work any more, but there are plenty of good suggested activities to stimulate learning over a wide variety of subjects.

This ad-supported website is a ClickSchooling favorite.  And while I’ve featured it before, I want all of our new subscribers to know about this fabulous resource. It’s filled with hundreds of FREE multi-media learning games, activities, videos, articles, and quizzes on every subject for all grade levels including History, Geography, and Social Studies.

When you get to the site, you will see menu icons in the center of the screen. I recommend that you scroll 3/4 down the page (below the icons) to find the activities sorted by grade level including:

*Preschool and Kindergarten – Learn about numbers, colors, shapes, animals, U.S. States, countries, and more.

*Elementary School to Early Middle School – Do activities that teach about math, grammar, geography, science, health, and more.

*Middle School to High School – Discover chemistry, geography, life sciences, and improve vocabulary for the SAT.

*College – Exercise your advance skill level in geography, medical terminology, and challenging brain teasers.

Click on any topic and a new page opens with a menu of activities that relate to that topic. For example, under “Middle School – High School” click on the subject “Geography.”  A new page opens with an assortment of U.S. and World geography games that you can play to boost your knowledge of where places are located in the world.

I also want to draw your attention to a special section called “Kid’s Corner: U.S.A.” You’ll find a great selection of social science activities that include:

Math Dude’s Tips

Hi!  It’s Monday, August 29, 2011 and time for Math at ClickSchooling!

The Math Dude

Age Range:  11 and up (with parental screening and supervision)

ClickScholar Jennifer recommended this unusual website that offers explanations and tips for making learning math easier from Jason Marshall, Ph.D., also known as “The Math Dude.”  Marshall is a research scientist at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) studying the infrared light emitted by starburst galaxies and quasars.

Math Dude’s tips are archived on a big, umbrella website called “Quick and Dirty Tips” with advice from experts in a variety of fields including education, money, work, health, and more.

IMPORTANT: This is an ad-supported website with randomly generated ads.  So, what looks fine today, may be inappropriate tomorrw.  Plus, I only looked at the Math Dude section for this review. Parents, as always, should preview this site and determine suitability of content and supervise all Internet use by children and teens.

When you get to the site you’ll see the headline “The Math Dude, and below it the words “All Tips” followed by a menu of Jason’s math tips. You can jump right in by clicking on any tip. A new page opens where you will see the tip or lesson presented in blog format, and you can click on an audio recording to listen as Jason delivers the tip.

You can also narrow the search field by clicking on the tiny horizontal menu located below the headline “The Math Dude” that includes:

*Beginning Math – Learn how to add quickly, convert decimals to fractions, multiply by eleven, determine area and volume, explore Venn diagrams, and more.

*Intermediate Math – Make a Mobius Strip, learn about the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio.

*Terms – Get a definition and explanation of math terms including irrational and rational numbers, sets and subsets, associative property, distributive property, trigonometry and more.

*Real World Math – Find out how to amaze your friends with number tricks, calculate how fast your money will grow, estimate how fast someone is running, and send encrypted messages.

You’ll even find tips to boost your business math skills, along with test-taking tips and a few brain teasers.

Online Literature Games & More!

Hi!  It’s Wednesday, June 8, 2011 and time for Language Arts at ClickSchooling!

Learning Games For Kids

Age Range: 4-12 (Pre-K & Elementary Grades, with Parental Guidance)

ClickScholar Theresa recommended this ad-supported website, sponsored by our friends at Time4Learning.com. It provides free interactive, multi-media learning games that help students practice language arts skills including reading, spelling, vocabulary, and keyboarding.

The site also includes learning games for other subject areas such as math, health, geography, social studies, and science.

I focused on the “Literature Games” section for this review.

When you get to the site, you’ll see an icon menu of the featured games. Look on the menu on the left side of the screen and click on “Literature Games.” A drop-down list appears with the following book titles:

  • Huckleberry Finn
  • David Copperfield
  • Gulliver’s Travels
  • How To Eat Fried Worms
  • Madeline
  • The Black Stallion
  • To Kill A Mockingbird
  • Where the Sidewalk Ends
  • Where the Wild Things Are
  • Wuthering Heights

Click on any title and a new page opens with a menu of games themed around that story.  You’ll find:

  • Fill in the Blank (based on the story line)
  • Hangman (using vocabulary words from the story)
  • Spelling Games (based on words in the story)
  • Word Search (using story vocabulary)
  • Word-O-Rama (match definitions to story vocabulary words)

If your children are reading or have read these book titles, they’ll enjoy the games.  If they haven’t read the books – it may inspire them to do so.

This site is a great resource for augmenting pre-k and elementary school studies – plus, it’s a whole lot of fun for the whole family!
