This archived website is a language lover’s paradise! The host, Dr. Goodword, has amassed an incredible array of helpful tips and activities to improve grammar, spelling, and vocabulary, along with fun interactive games and quizzes, and links to many other related resources.

Some of the fun language arts activities at the website include:

  • Game Closet — Try your hand at the Goodword Junior crossword puzzle. A few years’ worth of puzzles are archived here. All the words for each puzzle are available for you to review before you play. These crosswords can be played online (complete with hints and answers) or printed from the Teacher Resources page and completed offline. Also in the Game Closet is a huge collection of language jokes and stories about where English and other languages come from. Can you guess how old English is? You can find out here!
  • Miss Spelling’s Spelling Center — Find a fun poem to challenge your pronunciation skills (“Spelling Chaos”), six tips for better writing, lists of commonly mispronounced and misspelled words, and more!
  • Reference Shelf — This menu item takes you away from the “kids” section, back to the “mother” page for this website called AlphaDictionary.com, where you’ll find articles about the nature of language, correct usage, and other fascinating linguistic tidbits along with word games and activities for teens and adults.

Use the menu to find an array of items from exploration of English word origins and roots, to fun with puns, to text messaging shorthand and more. Sign up to receive a daily email with vocabulary words. You’ll also find:

At this website, you can access FREE, Internet-based curricula for grades PreK-8. (See more about high school, grades 9-12 below.)

This curricula was compiled by a homeschool mom, is meant to be college preparatory, and has a Christian point of view (but can be used and/or adjusted as needed by people of all faiths and beliefs).

Because today is Language Arts day at ClickSchooling, we focused on the English lessons for this review, but you will also find free curriculum for: 

  • Art
  • Bible
  • Computer
  • Spanish
  • History
  • Math
  • Music
  • PE/Health
  • Science (Biology, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry)

When you get to the site, read the introduction and then scroll down the menu to find Language Arts. Click on any grade level and a new page opens with 180 days (the standard school year) of lessons. The lessons contain links to free resources and materials on other websites such as books, poems, grammar, writing instructions, and printables, etc. You’ll find everything you need to provide instruction and deliver the curriculum to your children.


To access the free high school curriculum, visit the companion website, Easy Peasy All-In-One High School (http://allinonehighschool.com). The high school curriculum includes Bible, English, History, Humanities, Math, Science (with Labs), PE/Health, Electives, etc.


As explained at the website, “You’ll need paper, pencil, etc. and some minor supplies if you choose to do the experiments and art projects, but all of the reading materials, etc. are all free and online. My hope is to enable families to continue homeschooling no matter their life circumstances.”

This website offers a variety of free, multi-media, interactive games to practice and learn English Language Arts including grammar, parts of speech, and sight words.

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of six games that include: 

  • Panda Mayhem – Learn parts of speech and make silly sentences.
  • Base Word Baseball – Challenge your knowledge of base words and suffix endings.
  • Popcorn Words – Memorize the most common sight words.
  • Syllable Split – Break words into syllables.
  • Magic “e” Adventures – Find out what happens to a word when you add an “e” on the end. For example, “cap” becomes “cape”.
  • My Reading Tools – Use the reading tools you learned in the previous games to find the treasure.

But that’s not all! Use the horizontal menu at the top of the page to find an array of free math games to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You’ll even find timed quizzes to do online or print out and do offline. There is a fun science game too, that will help you discover what happens when you mix oxygen and nitrogen.

This ad-free website, designed by an English professor for students with a wide range of ability levels, provides free lessons in grammar and writing

When you get to the site you will see a menu of topics with search buttons below them. Click on the “arrow down” on any search button and you will see a drop-down menu of the amazing range of topics covered in that category as follows: 

  • Word & Sentence Level – adjectives, adverbs, nouns, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions, etc.
  • Paragraph Level – paragraph development, sentence variety, sentence combining, etc.
  • Essay & Research Paper Level – principles of composition, outlining, organization, structure, tone, formatting, plagiarism, etc.
  • Ask Grammar, Quizzes, Search Devices – Take interactive quizzes to test your knowledge of grammar.
  • Peripherals and PowerPoints – instructions, suggestions, resources, and demos for PowerPoint presentations.

Click on any topic in the drop-down menu and a new page opens with instructions delivered through text and illustration. Clear examples of the correct and incorrect forms are provided as well. Interactive quizzes at the end of each lesson allow the student to self-test their knowledge of the subject matter. 

This site is equivalent to having a complete English textbook online for free. The interactive element of the quizzes makes this rather dry material much more appealing to students.

This website offers all kinds of free, fun resources to teach and learn Language Arts (and Math, Science, and Social Sciences) through videos, songs, worksheets, flashcards, and more. Created by an elementary school teacher for classroom teachers, it provides an archive of free resources (and also some to purchase) to engage and educate kids in grades K-6.

When you get to the website you’ll see a menu of resources that are offered on the site. For this review, we were specifically interested in seeing what they offered for Language Arts, and discovered the following resources: 

  • Worksheets – Under “English” you’ll find printable worksheets that offer practice in grammar and parts of speech such as adverbs, adjectives, nouns, etc. You’ll also find worksheets for Phonics, Reading and Writing. Click on the topics to find an extensive menu that provides practice sheets in everything from basic alphabet to reading comprehension, spelling, and more.
  • Activities – Get printable crossword puzzles, word searches, and even reader’s theater scripts (so you can act out some favorite books).
  • Tools – Create your own worksheets, word lists, Flash Cards: Print them out to practice grammar, common and proper nouns, phonics, and vocabulary including synonyms and antonyms.
  • Music – You’ll find downloadable songs and lyrics that help kids learn grammar, phonics, and even a song for learning strategies for taking reading comprehension tests! Also, watch video lessons that teach about nouns, similes, subjects and predicates, and more.

Bookmark this site and use it as a year-round supplement to learning elementary subjects, or just have fun exploring the games, puzzles and activities with your kids.

Did you know that “Grammar Gorillas” is also a term used to describe any feature of grammar which people find particularly challenging? At this site, learn various parts of speech and grammar with this fast-paced, fun, and interactive game called “Grammar Gorillas.”

Most people don’t have pet gorillas. However, in Woodside, California there is a very unusual “pet” gorilla named Koko, who since 1971 has learned to sign over 1,000 words and can also understand spoken English! Here are a couple of websites that feature Koko and her uncanny ability with language arts:
