This website, sponsored by the Museo Galileo, provides free, fascinating, multimedia demonstrations of the uses of Galileo’s compass for math calculations, geometry, architecture, engineering, navigation, and other fields. Learn the history of the compass and Galileo’s contribution to its development during the Renaissance in 1597.


When you get to the site you’ll see a menu that includes: 

  • History – Watch a presentation about the history of the compass, Galileo’s invention of a specific type of compass, and the improvements he made upon it. See a comparison between compasses, and play the interactive “Compass Game.”
  • Explore – Learn about how it works.
  • Simulation – Watch engaging simulations of the many operations you can perform with Galileo’s compass, including: 
    • Division of a segment

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of math “themes” that include:

Click on any theme and a new page opens with a menu of selections for that particular math theme or strand. The games are colorful and engaging. Some lack sufficient explanation on how to play – so you may need to experiment a little until you figure it out.

This is one of the most innovative math sites we’ve seen. A Canadian mathematician/teacher developed this site to help classroom teachers address the multiple math skill levels of students through challenging and engaging activities and games that are demonstrated with slide shows or videos.

All of it can be tweaked for use in the homeschool environment. When you get to the site, click on “All Puzzles” then choose the grade level of interest to you. You can also switch to the subject menu.

  • In grades K-2 – Enjoy math games that teach patterns, skip counting, addition, symmetry, and more.
  • In grades 3-4 – Play dot-to-dot measuring puzzles, learn subtraction, Fibonacci numbers, and more.
  • In grades 5-6 – Practice division, discover prime numbers, practice factoring, and more.
  • In grades 7-9 – Enjoy a game of “Integral Fission,” practice multiplying fractions, engage in cipher breaking, do puzzles to learn about polygons, area, logic, and more.

Multiplication Games

This United Kingdom website offers a fee-based online math program, but it provides some free sample games that give kids practice in multiplication.

When you get to the site, you’ll see 3 game choices: 

  • Underwater Pursuit – Choose a number and then find the multiple.
  • Space Hunter – Answer the multiplication question before the space alien gets you.
  • Drone Race – Quickly answer before the opponent drone does.

You can also take a multiplication and division math test. You have 3 minutes to answer as many questions as you can.

  • Worksheets – Includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, decimals, geometry, algebra, numbers (rounding, comparing, skip counting, place value, integers, multiples and factors) or choose topics by grade
  • Multiplication Tables – Up through 10 or up through 12
  • Number Lines – Segmented at different intervals and includes negatives as well

Under Interactives you’ll find: 

  • Games – Drag-n-drop games that cover basic math facts and equivalent fractions
  • Flash Cards – For addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Lessons – Includes fractions, percent and division
