Field Trip to Cranberry Bog w/ Free Activity Book

Take a virtual tour of a cranberry bog and get some fun, cranberry-themed learning activities for kids! When you get to the site, enjoy watching professional videos about Wisconsin’s cranberry industry including its history as well as growing, harvesting, and packaging processes.

When you’re through watching the videos, use the menu to find the incredible photo slide-show. The pictures give you a better view of the bogs than the videos, and accompanying text explains what you are viewing.

Be sure to look on the menu to find the “For Kids” section where you can get a FREE downloadable and printable “Cranberry Activity Book” that includes word searches, crossword puzzles, color-by-number and easy cranberry craft and cooking projects.

Great Fire of London Tour & Game!

Museum of London – Great Fire of London Walking Tour

Age Range: 8 and up (with parental supervision)

The Museum of London offers this highly engaging virtual tour that combines actual video footage of present-day London with old drawings and maps from the time of the “Great Fire of London” in 1666. Hear the exciting story narrated as you go along, complete with quotes from eyewitness accounts! Plus, there is a bonus interactive animated game for kids (see below).

When you get to the site, you’ll see an introduction and the tour stops that include:

  • The Thames River by London Bridge
  • Church of St. Magnus the Martyr
  • Pudding Lane(where the fire began in a bakery)
  • The Guildhall(one of 2 buildings that survived the fire)
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral

This was designed as an ACTUAL audio/walking tour for real tourists in London (which is why it is downloadable in .mp4 and .3gp formats). However, the entire tour is now available as a series of nine videos on YouTube. It takes less than half an hour to watch the entire series.

Simply click on the YouTube links from the home page. Once you get to the second video, the series plays itself, so you don’t need to search around at the end of each video to find the next one. (Note: The playlist does continue on to other information about the Museum of London after the last video of the “Great Fire” tour.)

Because this was designed for real tourists, you’ll hear instructions and safety precautions in case you happen to be actually walking along London streets. Don’t let that confuse you. Just watch the videos and imagine that you are there! :)

Explore The Great Pyramids of Egypt!

The tomb of Egyptian boy-King Tut was discovered on November 4, 1922. Would you like to explore a pyramid and check out a pharaoh’s burial chamber? At this PBS website, you can take a free virtual tour of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the tombs and temples of Thebes, and you can even take a virtual walk around the Sphinx! This interactive virtual tour of the Land of the Pharaohs is provided through 360° panoramas and stunning photographs with interesting and informative text.

When you get to the site, you’ll see a picture of pyramids in the center of the page. Click on the words, “LAUNCH INTERACTIVE” next to the picture. A new screen opens to a map of ancient Egypt and drop-down menus that allow you to explore:

*Old Kingdom – Explore the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Khufu Pyramid, the Khafre Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the Giza Plateau.

*New Kingdom – Virtually tour the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Colossus of Memnon, the Tomb of Riekhmire, and the Tomb of Ramose.

Simply click on the place you want to explore.

If you select a pyramid, the image will appear on the screen with a drop-down menu that invites you to look inside the pyramid, see a cross-section map of the pyramid, view artifacts, and browse the photo gallery.

If you select a monument such as the Sphinx or Colossus of Memnon, you can take a “walk-around” virtual tour.

The images and content are spectacular. Younger children may enjoy this presentation with adult assistance to read the text and navigate the site.

Virtual Field Trip to Gold Mine!

Here’s your chance to take a virtual tour of an active, productive gold mine in South Africa.

From the main page you can see thumbnails of all the stops on the tour. Click any thumbnail for a larger photo and description. These large photos are actually 3D panoramic views; it pans around by itself so you can see the full scene, or you can click on the photo and control (or stop) the motion yourself. From any photo you can click “next” to proceed to the next tour stop.

This 15-stop tour starts at ground level and takes you through creating the mine, working the mine, worker safety (it can get really hot when you’re almost two miles below the surface of the earth), and processing the gold, eventually ending with gleaming gold bars.

Virtual Field Trip to Drumhead Factory

A lot more goes into making a drumhead than you might imagine. At this website you can watch a professional video of manufacturing drumheads at the Evans Drumheads factory.  You’ll see plastic film cut into circles, application of internal flaps, molding the drumhead, making the drum hoops, assembling the drumheads, applying the “swoosh” sound, and more. 
 
When you’re through watching the video (about 5 minutes), explore the other videos in the Evans’ media library and learn how to tune a tom or snare dru m. Watch backstage interviews with drummers and take some free drum lessons.

Kids Virtual Tour of National Arboretum!

The United States National Arboretum offers this educational virtual tour designed for kids. Learn about the many “weird, cool, and gross plants” that live in this gigantic outdoor space.

When you get to the site, read the brief introduction and then follow the instructions for taking the virtual tour that includes photographs and informative text that is sure to spark discussion. 

The interactive tour is laced with questions to challenge kids’ thinking and deepen the learning experience.

Plan to allow at least 20 minutes to take the entire tour.
