National Homeschool Book Award

Age Range: 9-17 (approximately, with parental guidance)

In March, I featured the National Homeschool Book Award (NHBA) website in a ClickSchooling review. It was developed by a group of homeschool moms in Minnesota “to celebrate current juvenile fiction that explores learning experiences occurring outside the traditional classroom setting and that resonates with homeschool readers.”

A spokesperson, Blair Loder, asked me to tell ClickSchooling subscribers about this endeavor again – and I think it’s such a great idea, I want to make sure you know about it.  There’s still time for you and your kids to participate in selecting this year’s winner!

It is free and easy to get involved — just read the four books that were nominated in March, and place your vote for your favorite in October. This year’s nominees are:

  • Alabama Moon by Watt Key
  • Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass
  • Savvy by Ingrid Law
  • The Remarkable & Very True Story of Lucy & Snowcap by H.M. Bouwman.

When you get to the website you’ll see images of the books. Click on any one to get free book-related curriculum that includes links to online resources such as:

  • Author Biography and Information
  • Activities and Extension Ideas
  • Games
  • Recipes
  • Study Guide

All of the ideas and activities are designed to be easily used with any number of children, from just one child at home to a larger group like a homeschool support group or a book club.

BRAND NEW! NHBA just launched a new sister site, What We’re Reading where they will be reviewing, from a homeschooler’s point of view, some of the books they’re reading for next year’s nominees.

Back on the main website, you’ll also find opportunities to learn more about the books and their authors through kid-friendly blog posts that feature information on topics in the books. Get ideas for activities you can do together to enrich your reading, including tips on how to start a National Homeschool Book Award book club in your own community.

Free Literature (Novel) Guides!

Recommended Website:
LitCharts.com

Age Range: 11 and up (middle/high school level, with parental guidance)

ClickScholar Mary suggested this website that offers free literature guides to help students analyze novels and plays.

LitCharts are similar to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes except the summary and analysis sections are side-by-side, making them easier to use. They are shorter than conventional guides, but haven’t sacrificed detail for brevity.

These literature guides provide students with everything needed to better understand what they read, ace any tests and quizzes, and write analysis papers.

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of literature titles that include:

  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • The Catcher In the Rye by J.D. Salinger
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • Hamlet by Shakespeare
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

You can view the guides online for free by clicking a title. A new page opens with the complete literature guide that includes:

  • Background Info
  • Plot Summary
  • Characters
  • Themes
  • Symbols
  • Quotes
  • Summary and Analysis by Chapter

You can also download the PDF of each one for free to view or print offline.  Or, pay $.99 each for an iPhone app.
