The Science Museum of Minnesota offers this website that is a wonderful mix of whimsy, science, and art through an exploration of windmills and whirligigs.

You can see some amazing pictures of wind-driven artistic creations, hear what they sound like, watch movies of some of them in action, and get instructions for how to make your own!

When you get to the site you will see a menu that includes:

  • Meet Vollis – Vollis Simpson has devoted a lifetime to making some of the most spectacular windmills and whirligigs you’ve ever seen. Take a photo album tour of his home and workshop and watch movies of his works of art in motion!
  • Visit The Yard – Take a tour of Vollis Simpson’s whirligig farm where you can see some gigantic wind-driven sculptures.
  • Follow A Whirlwind Tour – This is a comic-strip account of a tour of Vollis Simpson’s whirligig farm. (In our opinion, the real photos & movies are much better. This is sort of the result of a school-like activity to document what visitors experienced when they visited Simpson’s farm.)
  • Make Connections – Here’s where you’ll find a menu of links to other resources that extend learning about wind-driven devices and other stuff as well. Be sure to click on Beer Can Whirligig for instructions on how to make a simple whirligig out of beer or soda cans. Hmmm… perhaps you can make some whirligig gifts in time for Christmas!
  • Try These – Find an assortment of activities to do and things to make – from pinwheels to pop bottle whirlers to motion machines. You’ll also find reading recommendations themed around windmills and whirligigs.

This site offers lots of fun ways to learn how to harness wind power through artistic and whimsical devices. Great fun!
