It’s Friday, July 28, 2017, and time for a Virtual Field Trip at ClickSchooling!

Recommended Website:

National Music Museum

(nmmusd.org/Collections)

Age Range: All (All grades; children with parental supervision)

Browse the galleries of the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota with this website.

When you get to the site, click on “Virtual Tours”. Then choose from the list of nineteen tours which include exhibits of:

  • 17th, 18th, and 19th century keyboard instruments
  • Harmonicas
  • Instruments from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands
  • Musical Treasures from the Age of Revolution & Romance 1789-1848
  • Musical Innovations of the Industrial Revolution and European folk instruments
  • American music and instruments
  • Reed Organs, Pianos, and a Grand Harmonicon
  • Great American Guitars
  • The Music Man Exhibit
  • Czech and Slovak music
  • Italian String instrument making
  • Brass Instruments
  • And much more.

Once a gallery is selected, click on an instrument from the list to view images and text about the piece. Navigation can be tricky as no two pages seem to have the same method of moving around. Typically, to browse through to the next item in a collection, use the curved arrow icon or return to the index by selecting the “Go to Virtual Gallery Tour Index.” If this option is not available you can use the back option in your browser window until you reach the index. You can click on an image to see a larger version on most items but will need to use your back button to return to the previous page.

Each item in a gallery includes pictures and descriptions of the item.

There are also sound clips available for different instruments on the Sound Samplings page. To hear the audios, look for a bullet point dot and click the highlighted text in the sentence.

Once visitors have become familiar with navigation, this is a wonderful tour to add to your music studies.
