Age Range: 9-18 (Grades 4-12, with parental supervision)

This website created by 8th grade science teacher, Tim Martin, shares information and images of his trip to Mt. St. Helens in 2001.

Use the left-hand sidebar menu to begin your “Virtual Field Trips.” When arriving on the next page, scroll over the map to find locations to explore or use the side bar menu again to select your destination. Locations include:

  • Johnston Ridge
  • Blast Zone Hills
  • Trail of Two Forests
  • Ape Cave
  • Lahar View
  • Lava Canyon

Most of the locations provide a manual slide show. Please note that when selecting to “Begin the Hike” or the “Explore” link the page opened to a message about using Internet Explorer but we clicked the “If you would like to proceed anyway, click here.” link and were able to successfully access the slides for the tour. The images include brief descriptions and information about the location. When you have finished with the tours, select the “Up” link to return to the home page. There are a few more links that visitors will also want to check out:

  • May 18, 1980 – provides a brief article about the day Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980
  • Related Links – links to pages on the USGS website and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest
  • For Educators – suggestions for experiments and demonstrations relating to volcanoes
