The Price of Freedom: Americans at War

(amhistory.si.edu/militaryhistory/)

Age Range: 10-18 (Grades 5-12, with parental supervision)

From the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Behring Center, this website provides an interactive exploration of the artifacts and history of American wars from the War of Independence to the War in Iraq.

Navigating this website is very straight-forward. When arriving at the link, read the brief introduction text then select the “Enter the Exhibition” button. From here a timeline of conflict populates from which you can choose:

  • War of Independence
  • War of 1812
  • Eastern Indian Wars
  • Mexican War
  • Civil War
  • Western Indian Wars
  • Spanish American War
  • World War I
  • World War II
  • Korean War
  • Vietnam War
  • Cold War
  • New American Roles

Once you have selected your area of interest, a summary page opens, then you select “Begin” to view the exhibit. Next, watch the overview video, then “Enter Exhibit.” Once in the exhibit, read about the history of the conflict, view interesting images, and examine related artifacts. The exhibits include a printable version of the entry.

Both on the home page and at the bottom of any exhibit page, there is a link to Learning Resources that can be downloaded which include lesson plans and guides to the collection. There are also supplementary videos to the various sections.

This is a great addition to your bookmarks for Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, or other patriotic holiday studies or as a supplement for your American history class.
