Age Range: 14-18 (Grades 9-12, with parental supervision)

This website offers a free, fun, multi-media interactive game called “The Be a Reporter Game” that transforms students into virtual reporters. (While the game is free, you must register to play.) Sponsored by the Poynter Institute and Knight Foundation, this site offers over 65 journalism training courses (some that are free, others that are available for a fee) on writing and reporting, multimedia storytelling, ethics and values in journalism and much more. Professional journalists use this site for continuing education in their field.

To play the game, click on Enroll Now to register for free as a user and complete the registration. Then enroll in the course, “Be A Reporter Game” and read the course description. As a virtual reporter, you’ll interact with video clips of characters crucial to the story you are investigating. You’ll also have to do some research at the game’s public records department. You’ll hear from your no-nonsense editor too – who will try to whip you into shape as an investigative journalist as you race to file your story before the deadline. It’s a lot of fun and you’ll learn quite a bit along the way.

When you’re through playing the game, browse the menu of courses – there’s also a “Be An Editor Game.” Again, you’ll find both paid and free courses relating to journalism including Self-Directed Courses, Group Seminars, Master Classes, Certificate Programs and Webinars.
