Age Range: 6-10 (Grades 1-5, with parental supervision; however, the whole family may enjoy this activity)

 

At this website, you can watch a 5-minute video of a teacher in a classroom helping young students use their reasoning skills to estimate the number of cranberries in a jar. You can watch the students interact and answer the teacher’s questions, and hear the comments of a narrator who explains the importance of the exercise.

It would be simple to replicate this math experiment at home. And to help you do that, the Annenberg website provides a free lesson transcript.
