The Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley, California, offers this website that is devoted to teaching biology and ecology by providing free, fun, and educational outdoor science activity guides. Designed for group learning, they can be easily tweaked for individual investigations.
When you get to the site you’ll see a welcome message and an icon menu of sample activities. Use the horizontal menu at the top of the home page and click on “Activities” to access the dozens of activity guides archived at this site that cover topics such as:
  • Animal Behavior
  • Plants
  • Invertebrates
  • Predator-Prey Relationships
  • Animal/Plant Interactions
  • Insects
  • Birds
  • Climate
Click on any topic and a new page opens with an icon menu of the activity guides. Place your cursor over each icon to see a pop-up window with a brief description of the activity, the time it typically takes to complete, the recommended age range, and what size group the activity will accommodate. Click on the icon to open a new page that contains the lesson summary, learning outcomes, and the activity instructions in a downloadable pdf. The activities are all designed to educate through fun, hands-on learning experiences and games in the great outdoors.

As we reviewed a variety of the activity guides, we saw the potential for use in the homeschool environment as either an activity for family learning, or as a resource for co-op classes and homeschool support groups.
