Together Counts-Energy Balance Curriculum

Age Range: 3-12 (Grades PreK-5, with parental supervision)

Together Counts describe themselves as a nationwide program inspiring active and healthy living. The principle behind their program is Energy Balance, which means balancing the calories we consume with the calories we burn. “Calories in, calories out.” Together Counts was started by The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a CEO-led organization, that is a national, multi-year effort designed to help reduce obesity – especially childhood obesity – by 2015.
The Energy Balance 101 curriculum is designed to promote physical activity and inspire kids to be mindful of their daily energy balance for life. The activities provided are designed to be fun, playful, and motivational; age-appropriate and inclusive of all skill levels and abilities; and suitable indoors and out of doors. Although these activities are educational and nutrition- or fitness-oriented, they are more casual than a lesson plan and can be adapted to use at your own pace. Many encourage free-form outdoor play and teach fun games that incorporate physical activity. This resource is available in English and Spanish in a number of levels:
  • Pre-K
  • K-2nd grade
  • 3rd – 5th grade

When you get to the Homeschool Headquarters page of the website, download the curriculum by clicking on your age-range preference in the middle of the page. Then go to the navigation menu at the top and click on “tips and tools” to find these 3 fun interactives designed to teach key Energy Balance concepts:

  • Power Up
  • The Anatomy of a Food Label
  • The Scales of Energy

And check out the blog to read articles about things like:

  • Family Fitness
  • Healthy Living
