Escape From Knab
Age Range: 8-18 (approximately, non-readers will need parental assistance)
What genius! Escape from Knab is an engaging, educational, and multi-media simulation that requires players to use their math and critical thinking skills to make financial decisions in order to earn enough money to escape from the fictitious planet Knab.
When you get to the site, sponsored by USBank and others, you’ll discover this is not just another math game. The player must get a job in order to earn enough money to buy a $10,000 ticket back to Earth. You have to fill out an employment application and a W-4 form – and you’ll learn about concepts like “tax deductions” along the way.
Once you have employment, you must budget your money by deducting rent, food, and transportation from the net wage after taxes. Plus, you have to save money (to buy that ticket home) — and you’ll learn about interest rates, savings accounts, investment opportunities, and risk versus rate of return in the process.
Oops! An emergency requires an unanticipated expense — a can of oxygen! Learn how to write a check to the oxygen salesman.
An opportunity to buy a house on Knab helps you to learn about mortgages, homeowner’s insurance, and property taxes.
Find out the financial advantages and disadvantages of buying or leasing a hovercraft.
After working so hard you may want to take a vacation — does the money come from savings, a loan, or a credit card — and what are the repercussions of each?
It’s time to return to Earth — sell your house and calculate the capital gains tax.
Can you manage your money wisely enough to buy a ticket home? Take your whole family to Knab and find out!
Enjoy!
