There are commemorative stamps for people and events of historical importance. Just looking at stamps can result in long discussions about what each stamp represents.
For example, tomorrow, January 8th, happens to be the birthday of Elvis Presley. Did you know that he was the first rock musician to be featured on a U.S. Postage Stamp? The stamp was issued on January 8, 1993, on what would have been Elvis’ 58th birthday. He was born in 1935. You can see a picture of the Elvis stamp at the United States Postal Service website.
You don’t have to be a philatelist (stamp collector) to enjoy stamps.
At the National Postal Museum’s website you can visit virtual stamp galleries that explore America’s postal history from colonial times to the present. You can explore the galleries online and see commemorative stamps, read the historical background, learn how stamps are made, or just marvel at the artistic beauty of stamps. From galleries to games, the National Postal Museum offers innumerable ways to explore history through stamps.
If you have budding philatelists in your home, you may also enjoy this website:
