ClickScholar Chandra recommended this website sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Verizon Foundation, and the National Trust for the Humanities. It offers high-quality online lesson plans integrated with resources to promote active learning in literature and language arts (as well as other subjects such as art, foreign language, history and social studies) through links to carefully screened educational websites.

Designed for teachers, students, and parents the website proclaims that the content has, “been judged by humanities specialists to be of high intellectual quality.” The site doesn’t offer a specific curriculum, it simply offers lessons and resources to further learning or to enhance learning.

When you get to the site, use the menu tab at the top of the page and click on “Literature & Language Arts.” A new page opens to a menu of lesson plans. Look for the “Subject Navigator” directly above the menu. Then, use the drop-down menu to select a subcategory of literature to explore such as:

  • American
  • Biography
  • British
  • Classic
  • Drama
  • Essay
  • Fiction
  • Poetry
  • World

Then, select the grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and click on the “Display” button. A new page opens to a menu of topics based on your search parameters. Click on any one and you’ll be treated to a lesson plan that includes links to:

  • Selected Literature you can read for FREE on the net
  • Online resources that will provide context for the lesson plan
  • Suggested Activities to extend the learning.

This content is so extensive that a description here simply doesn’t do it justice. This is a remarkable resource for the home educator — so bookmark it to return often.
