Last week I asked you to provide suggestions for ClickSchooling websites and to let me know what you really want and need from ClickSchooling. ClickScholar, Linda Barlow, recommended today’s website in a round-about way when she wrote:
“The one thing I am battling to find is ‘File Folder’ type activities for older kids. There are loads for Kindergarten and 1st grade, but hardly anything for kids from 4th grade up. It is nice to be able to give your kids a couple of things that they can get on with by themselves that reinforce basic skills, while you work with the other children! I mean things that are fun and interesting to do – not just boring text book stuff!”
For those of you who (like me) are unfamiliar with the term “File Folder Activities” – it is a clever method for organizing games and learning materials so that kids can easily access them. For example: You print out game worksheets and glue them onto a sturdy file folder. Then, you print out the game pieces, cut them apart, and laminate them. Finally, you apply Velcro so that the game pieces will stick to the worksheets. It’s do-it-yourself math games and manipulatives.
Because I had never heard of “File Folder” activities, I asked Linda to provide a url to a sample. She provided the link to today’s featured website. It offers free, printable file folder games and activities (created by a Special Education teacher) that help young children and children with disabilities to practice basic skills such as:
- matching
- sorting
- identification of shapes, colors, and numbers
- counting
- beginning math and phonics
The activities at this site are for younger children, but older children may enjoy preparing them for their siblings. (While there are a variety of free File Folder activities at this commercial site, there are many more available for sale.)
Linda was kind enough to educate me about “File Folder” activities. I know many of you will enjoy this site that she recommended. However, it doesn’t solve Linda’s problem – in that she’s looking for these kinds of activities for older children. Specifically, she’d like to find free file folder materials that will reinforce skills such as vocabulary, spelling, math, grammar, and social studies – but it must be FUN! If you have any recommendations, please send them to me and I’ll forward them to Linda. :)
